The goal of this chapter is to take some of the mystery out of dealing with media files and take you through some common situations. Before we dive in, here are some important and/or helpful things to be aware of:
The topics covered, and recipes of steps provided in this chapter, are geared towards those using local media drives for storage, for example, the internal hard drive, fixed hard drive(s), and/or a relatively small, local RAID.
Those working at a facility with Avid Unity, Avid ISIS, Avid Interplay, or another shared storage solution must consult with their facility's technical administrators or lead assistant editors before carrying out any media management functions in a shared storage environment. Failing to do so can cause inadvertent loss of media and/or employment.
