AI, Machine Learning, and Statistics - A Taxonomy
In the current literature and in media articles, there is often a misrepresentation of the meanings of the terms artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). These terms are often used interchangeably and as synonyms. However, in this chapter, we differentiate between AI and ML. We define AI as a capability, and ML is defined as a set of techniques that can enable us to achieve some form of AI. For many readers and practitioners, it might also be interesting to reiterate the difference between ML and statistics, more specifically, statistical machine learning. Although it is not required to master the technical details of all these definitions, we believe you could benefit a lot from understanding the key aspects of the disciplines, which will certainly help you with the rest of the book.
