Summary

In this chapter we started by setting up a scenario that would allow us to emulate a penetration test from start to finish. We moved on to setting up the test environment and then delving into the stages necessary for a successful penetration test.

Once the basics were covered you were challenged to perform a test of your own against this environment. Hopefully, it was both challenging and exciting for you!

We finished up the chapter by providing a walkthrough of one possible method of performing this penetration test. There are other ways of doing the same task, some better than others. The goal was to show just one of these methods. Play around with the lab and try additional scenarios. Use it to gain the skills you need or to hone the skills you have. When the time comes to do the job you will need all of the luck and skill you can get because if one thing is certain in this world: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong" – Murphy's Law.
