Teaching with Google Classroom

Chapter 1: Getting to Know Google Classroom

Google Classroom is a learning management system (often abbreviated to LMS) offered by Google to teachers. It provides a central location to communicate with students, share resources, pose questions, and create assignments. In an increasingly digital world, Google Classroom helps facilitate online learning for today's digital learners. As with many new applications, Google Classroom comes with a unique look and feel. Since your method of setting up your physical classroom is as unique as your method of teaching, Google Classroom begins as a blank canvas. Before we can add students into Google Classroom, you will need to create online Classes for your physical classes.

First, you will get comfortable with where everything is in Google Classroom. Being the teacher of the Classroom will provide access to options that are not visible to students and will allow you to change settings, such as what students can do in Google Classroom. You will be able to add students to the Classroom, create announcements and assignments, and upload course materials from this teacher view of the Classroom. But first, you will need to create and set up your first Class.

In my Classes, I tend to spend most of my time thinking about the structure of the online Class before creating it. As creatures of habit, establishing online expectations through Google Classroom, similar to what we do in person, will help us and our students know where to turn. Examples of some of the questions I ask myself when planning an online Class include: How do students ask questions? When is it appropriate for them to ask questions? Where do they find resources? How are they dismissed? By establishing this structure at the beginning, you will feel less guilty about not responding when a student contacts you at 7:30 in the evening with a question.

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Creating your first Google Class
  • Navigating around Google Classroom
  • Personalizing your virtual Classroom
  • Managing resources in your Class
  • Inviting additional teachers
  • Accessing Classes from Google Classroom's home page

    Note

Within this book, Class references a Google Classroom Class and class references a bricks-and-mortar classroom.

This handy how-to manual for using Google Classroom does not stop there. Michael Zhang includes key features of other Google Workspace apps and tools that work seamlessly with Google Classroom. The book also serves as a guide for attending to a multitude of student and staff technology needs beyond Google Classroom that may be encountered at school, such as Chrome installation, using Google Workspace apps on a variety of devices, and audio and video set-up best practices for online learning experiences. The author does a fantastic job of intertwining a how-to manual with sound pedagogy by frequently pausing to provide examples and sharing best practices of how he uses Google Classroom and other Google Workspace apps with his own classes. He successfully illustrates the versatility of the Google Classroom platform for managing both brick-and-mortar classrooms and online learning environments.Blended learning meets the needs of education in our new reality of being prepared to transition to online learning as the need arises and this book takes the stress out of having to make such a transition in the spur of the moment or with minimal experience using Google Classroom and other Google Workspace apps and tools. With quality screenshots and captions, the author does a nice job of helping to ease teachers’ minds about setting up a digital classroom and effectively using it with students in school or online.

Michael Zhang has put together a solid complete guide to Google Classroom. He offers many images and diagrams to help you know where to click. If you have never used Google Classroom, you will find this guide super helpful as it walks you through all aspects of the LMS. Even for those of us who have used Google Classroom for years, will learn some great tips and tricks for using Google Classroom effectively.Zhang doesn't limit discussion to just Google Classroom. He talks about how to integrate Forms, Sites, Meet, add-ons, and more. He showcases how to use these tools effectively to support students. He takes you through the entire loop from signing students up for your classroom to offering feedback in both formative and summative assessments. Zhang offers solid advice about grading in an online environment and how to integrate online and in class discussions effectively. For me though, the best part of this book came in the tips and notes that are sprinkled throughout the book. While you are learning how to use the program, you are also learning some of the best ways to leverage these tools. You are also getting some important information that will expand your understanding. This book is for anyone that wants to make sure they are using Google Classroom effectively for their students. It will also be an amazing reference for you as you get comfortable with using Google Classroom in your daily practice.

This book is filled with helpful tips and detailed descriptions for everyone attempting to shift their practice online in this new educational atmosphere. Even me, an avid google techy, was able to glean helpful tips and useful time-saving features from this book jam packed full of step-by-step guides and how-to descriptions. I especially enjoyed the authors suggestions regarding pedagogy in the final chapter where he offers his thoughts about assessment in an online environment and how to best support students as they attempt to continue their learning away from the classroom. I can appreciate the effort that the author has taken in order to make a transition to online learning easier for all of us.

Great resource! In our current world of teaching online and in-person, Google Classroom is being used in many schools. Whether you are new to Google Classroom or have experience with it, I am sure that Zhang will provide you with some nuggets to take away and integrate into your teaching immediately. The screenshots help you navigate each of the techniques and concepts being described. I appreciate how topics cover more than just the set up of Google Classroom, but also look into assessment and pedagogy within online learning. The only downfall to a book like this is the fact that technology (and Google Classroom) are constantly evolving and changing. Zhang does a great job of describing where you may see changes come into play. I hope he continues to create new editions as time goes on. This book provides some great insight into how Google Classroom can be utilized best in a JH/HS or secondary setting. It would be great to see some insight shared from an elementary teacher in a future edition as well.

Teaching with Google Classroom is a well-designed, laid-out addition to any educator's toolkit. The layout of the book walks users through the initial setup of a Google Classroom account through the major need-to-know sections on how to maximize your time when teaching online. Additionally, throughout the book, the author includes easy-to-follow diagrams that take the guesswork out of “where to click” which can be an issue in these types of guidebooks. While there are a number of amazing tips in this book, a few things really stand out to me. First, the author acknowledges that users may be on laptops, mobile devices, or other types of technology and walks users through each process. Second, the author includes tips for making work more streamlined and accessible to students, parents, and educators. Finally, the author allows that there are continual updates being made to the Google platform and that depending on when you are reading the guide things may be different colors, in different places, or have different names. This is critical for readers, as searching for a button that no longer exists can be frustrating and time-consuming. Overall this book is well written and has many useful tips for beginners, intermediates, and experts and is very useful for anyone who plans to use Google Classroom on a regular basis. The tools outlined make teaching online or in-person much easier, as it allows educators to quickly locate the tool they need and implement it immediately. From the Table of Contents to the Index, Teaching with Google Classroom is a game-changer that all educators who use the Google Suite should purchase for their use.
