Identifying an OS for an AVD implementation

In this section, we will cover the different OSs available to you.

Supported Azure OS images

AVD supports the following OS images:

Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session
Windows 11 Enterprise
Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session
Windows 10 Enterprise
Windows Server 2022
Windows Server 2019
Windows Server 2016

Importantly, AVD does not support x86 (32-bit) OSs.

What is Windows 11 multi-session?

Windows 11 multi-session is a Remote Desktop session host offering that allows multiple concurrent remote user sessions. Previously with on-premises desktop virtualization solutions such as RDS, you had no option but to use multi-session using Windows Server OSs.

This new version gives users the same Windows 11 desktop experience rather than a server desktop UI. Organizations can also benefit from multi-session cost benefits and use existing per-user Windows licensing rather than the traditional RDS...
