Summary

By using the effect methods that we have explored in this chapter, we should now be able to modify inline style attributes from JavaScript, apply prepackaged jQuery effects to elements, and create our own custom animations. In particular, we learned how to incrementally increase and decrease text size by using either the .css() or .animate() methods, gradually hide and show page elements by modifying several attributes, and how to animate elements (simultaneously or sequentially) in a number of ways.

In the first four chapters of this book, all of our examples have involved manipulating elements that have been hardcoded into the page's HTML. In Chapter 5, Manipulating the DOM, we will explore ways to manipulate the DOM directly, including using jQuery to create new elements and insert them into the DOM wherever we choose.

Further reading

The topic of animation will be explored in more detail in Chapter 11, Advanced Effects. A complete list of effect and styling methods is available...
