Creating speed ramps


For a little extra time-warping flair, we can slow clips down as they play along, making them go slower and sloowwer.... and slooooowweeer........... Or inversely, we can make them start at a snail's pace and keep getting faster and faster and faster until they're up and running at normal speed even faster than real time.

How to do it...

  1. 1. Highlight a clip in your timeline.

  2. 2. Click on the Retime button to bring up the pop-up menu and select Speed Ramp | from 0%, as shown in the following screenshot:

    Your clip will stretch out in length and be split into four segments, each with a different speed percentage getting closer to 100%, as follows:

  3. 3. Play back the clip with the / key. Watch as the clip starts in slow motion and gets close to regular speed by the end.

    The one thing that might feel a bit odd is that the clip doesn't ever reach 100% speed at the end. Let's fix that.

  4. 4. In the fourth segment, click on the two vertical lines at the right-hand edge of the segment and...
