Collecting and formatting Bitcoin/Litecoin wallet hashes
It is worth noting at the outset that there are many, many types of cryptocurrencies that have come and gone over the years. We are focused on Bitcoin/Litecoin and Ethereum in this chapter for a few reasons.
A large number of cryptocurrencies are based on the codebase of Bitcoin and Litecoin. These are often referred to as ‘altcoins’ and in some cases are created by using the original Bitcoin/Litecoin code and changing the variable and display names throughout the codebase. Litecoin itself is an altcoin of Bitcoin. However, the similarities in the wallet software of these various coins means the process of extracting hashes and cracking is very similar across coins.
Ethereum is one of the more prominent cryptocurrencies today and has a dedicated cracking mode in hashcat. This means that the knowledge and techniques here may be readily transferrable to other kinds of coins, which is why we cover the ones we...
