Implementing IaaS Compute Optimization
Compute, in all of its different flavors, is almost always where we can have the most room for optimization when implementing FinOps practices.
Even when building solutions with cost optimization in mind, some things might be overlooked. To avoid this, across the different sections of this chapter, we are going to introduce a lot of initiatives and ideas to keep in mind, as well as new purchasing and licensing models, such as Reserved Instances and Spot Instances, that need to be in the toolbox of each FinOps practitioner.
The aim of this chapter is to provide FinOps practitioners with a checklist of sorts that they can resort to any time they need to optimize any compute-related resource or solution. Apart from the concepts and ideas, we will provide examples when possible to illustrate the magnitude of savings we can obtain by applying the ideas and architecting techniques we will be covering.
