Learning the vocabulary of systems thinking

The vocabulary of systems thinking is unique and not directly tied to Agile or Lean practices. But the concepts behind systems thinking are powerful and useful in helping teams collaborate in analyzing the elements and interrelationships within their large and complex business systems. The following list includes the basic terms of use in systems thinking and causal loop diagrams:

  • Systems: These are complex structures of tangible and intangible things, principles, procedures, and social and political environments that collectively serve some purpose or function.
  • Elements: This term refers to the collection of parts that make up a system. These could be tangible and intangible things, principles, procedures, or social and political environments that participate in and guide the system's behaviors.
