Understanding gap assessments
Gap assessments play a critical role in the context of digital transformations, acting as a strategic tool to compare the current state of an organization’s processes, technologies, and capabilities against its desired future state or industry benchmarks and know good practices. The primary goal of a gap assessment is to identify the differences (gaps) between where an organization is and where it wants or needs to be to achieve its digital transformation objectives. These assessments are vital for several reasons, and their conduct and the utilization of their results follow a structured approach.
Figure 6.4 shows an example gap assessment summary. A gap score is calculated for the practice area according to importance and current practice level. The set of scores across all practice areas is ranked to determine the practice area priorities.
