As you know, switches are network devices that have multiple ports. This means that there might be situations when a few switch ports might not be used. Unused ports represent the potential for an intruder to gain access to an organization's network. To avoid such situations, port security comes into play, by disabling unused ports. In addition, to enable protection against unauthorized access by unplugging a connected device, the MAC address of a device can be associated with a switch port. With that in mind, it can be summarized that port security enables security on switch ports by limiting the devices that can connect to ports on the switch.
