Getting Started with LTE Network Simulations Using ns-3
In order to cope with the explosion of data traffic demands from a huge number of mobile subscribers, 3GPP came up with next-generation (4G) long-term evolution (LTE) mobile networks. Unlike 2G/3G traditional circuit-switched systems and packet data networks, LTE aims at offering both voice and data services using packet-switched networks. Broadly, LTE architecture comprises the core network (Evolved Packet Core (EPC)) and the radio access network (RAN). Mainly, LTE supports the following major features:
- Higher data rates (downlink transmission speed around 100 Mbps and uplink transmission speed around 50 Mbps)
- Lower connection establishment delay (<100 ms) and transmission latencies (<10 ms)
- LTE mobile networks can be deployed in the following range of operating bandwidths: 1.4 to 20 MHz
