Threat Landscape
The profile of attackers is ever-changing. Threats may come in the form of attacks from “foreign nations,” “competitors,” “criminal hackers,” “hacktivists,” “script kiddies,” and “opportunists.” Usually, the internal threat in an organization or environment is hardest to detect, guard against, and often forgotten. Attackers are not always strangers; they could be insiders or disgruntled ex-employees, and they can have the greatest impact due to their insights into the systems and data.
To not become an easy target for opportunists and crafted attacks, you must put in measures that aim to raise the attacker’s costs significantly. This forces them to divert their resources and activities to an easier attack target with a higher return on their attack investment.
