Teams as a Telephony Platform
Teams is also a full voice conferencing and calling platform. In addition to chat, end users can make calls to both Teams users and those on traditional phone systems, as well as host online meetings and events. Teams allow users to initiate PC-to-PC calls through the Teams client, dial out to and receive calls from the public switched telephone network (PSTN), and conduct impromptu meetings via the Meet now functionality. You can see an example of a Teams meeting in Figure 4.8:

The Teams Phone platform can be activated in three ways:
- Subscribing to native Microsoft Calling Plans (a phone service plan with Microsoft acting as the carrier)
- Connecting to an existing compatible infrastructure using session border controllers (SBCs) through Direct Routing
