In a physical desktop environment, there are a number of ways in which the operating system can be built and deployed. For example, you could use the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) or maybe the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM). Both of these options can be used along with all the other tools that are available to build desktop images, including VMware's own Mirage product, of course.
