Hands-On Full Stack Development with Spring Boot 2 and React

Setting Up the Environment and Tools - Backend

In this chapter, we will set up the environment and tools needed for backend programming with Spring Boot. Spring Boot is a modern Java-based backend framework that makes development faster than traditional Java-based frameworks. With Spring Boot, you can make a standalone web application that has an embedded application server.

In this chapter, we will look into the following topics:

  • Building an environment for Spring Boot development
  • The basics of the Eclipse IDE and Maven
  • Creating and running Spring Boot projects
  • Problem solving when running Spring Boot applications

Technical requirements

Setting up the environment and tools

There are a lot of different integrated development environment (IDE) tools that you can use to develop Spring Boot applications. In this book, we are using Eclipse, which is an open source IDE for multiple programming languages. We will create our first Spring Boot project by using the Spring Initializr project starter page. The project is then imported into Eclipse and executed. Reading the console log is a crucial skill when developing Spring Boot applications.

Installing Eclipse

Eclipse is an open source programming IDE developed by the Eclipse Foundation. An installation package can be downloaded from https://www.eclipse.org/downloads. Eclipse is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS...

Summary

In this chapter, we installed the tools that are needed for backend development with Spring Boot. For Java development, we used the Eclipse IDE, which is a widely used programming IDE. We created a new Spring Boot project by using the Spring Initializr page. After creating the project, it was imported to Eclipse and, finally, executed. We also covered how to solve common problems with Spring Boot and how to find important error and log messages. Finally, we installed a MariaDB database, which we are going to use in the following chapters.

In the next chapter, we will understand what dependency injection is and how it can be used with the Spring Boot framework.

Questions

  1. What is Spring Boot?
  2. What is the Eclipse IDE?
  3. What is Maven?
  4. How do we create a Spring Boot project?
  5. How do we run a Spring Boot project?
  6. How do we use logging with Spring Boot?
  7. How do we find error and log messages in Eclipse?

Key benefits

  • Unleash the power of React Hooks to build interactive and complex user interfaces
  • Build scalable full stack applications designed to meet demands of modern users
  • Understand how the Axios library simplifies CRUD operations

Description

React Hooks have changed the way React components are coded. They enable you to write components in a more intuitive way without using classes, which makes your code easier to read and maintain. Building on from the previous edition, this book is updated with React Hooks and the latest changes introduced in create-react-app and Spring Boot 2.1. This book starts with a brief introduction to Spring Boot. You’ll understand how to use dependency injection and work with the data access layer of Spring using Hibernate as the ORM tool. You’ll then learn how to build your own RESTful API endpoints for web applications. As you advance, the book introduces you to other Spring components, such as Spring Security to help you secure the backend. Moving on, you’ll explore React and its app development environment and components for building your frontend. Finally, you’ll create a Docker container for your application by implementing the best practices that underpin professional full stack web development. By the end of this book, you’ll be equipped with all the knowledge you need to build modern full stack applications with Spring Boot for the backend and React for the frontend.

Who is this book for?

If you are a Java developer familiar with Spring, but are new to building full stack applications, this is the book for you.

What you will learn

  • Create a RESTful web service with Spring Boot
  • Grasp the fundamentals of dependency injection and how to use it for backend development
  • Discover techniques for securing the backend using Spring Security
  • Understand how to use React for frontend programming
  • Benefit from the Heroku cloud server by deploying your application to it
  • Delve into the techniques for creating unit tests using JUnit
  • Explore the Material UI component library to make more user-friendly user interfaces

I'm new to Spring, so I was looking for a good introduction. This book doesn't go very deep into the details, but for me it was just the practical intro I hoped to find. Packt is always the first address for me when I need a practical computer book!

I have been a Java developer for years and recently begun learning React. I purchased this book because it mostly was related to what I do at my day job. This book does not go deep into details on things like Java 8 functional programming or deep into React Hooks but covers a ton of useful information. Something I like in addition to the use of Spring Boot 2 and React is that this book also covers some information on testing and security. I feel like many developers focus so much on simply coding but do not learn much security and testing. This book gives you the tools the write full stack applications using test driven development and including security. Again, the book does not go deep into any given details to make someone who finishes it feel like an SME but it is enough to get their feet wet in a breadth of material.

This is an excellent book for an introduction to Spring Boot and React. Of course these are vast frameworks, and no book of this length could hope to cover them completely, but what you do get is a thorough explanation of developing an end-to-end application, from client UI through to back end services. Lots of useful information regarding development tools, and third party libraries. So aside from a couple of technical errors, which were resolved by a bit of Googling, this book gave me exactly what I wanted, and expected. So if you want a good intro to full stack development, this book does a great job, and certainly whets your appetite to learn more.

The book itself is a good intro to React with Spring but the Packt publishing process is simply unacceptable. This is the second recent book from Packt with a defective/unfinished cover where the ink is left exposed. It is so unpleasant that I end up tearing off the cover. Sorry to leave negative review knowing the author went through the hard work of writing a book but I did not see a way to review the Packt physical book quality separate from the written content.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access.
