Key benefits

  • Learn how to create, rig, and animate 3D low-poly models in Blender
  • Discover the 3D workflow of Godot Engine and understand how to enhance your models
  • Use modeling and game design skills to create a dynamic point-and-click game

Description

Game Development with Blender and Godot is a comprehensive introduction for those new to building 3D models and games, allowing you to leverage the abilities of these two technologies to create dynamic, interactive, and engaging games. This book will start by focusing on what low-poly modeling is, before showing you how to use Blender to create, rig, and animate your models. You will also polish these assets until they’re game-ready, making it easy for you to import them into Godot and use them effectively and efficiently. Next, you will use the game engine to design scenes, work with light and shadows, and transform your 3D models into interactive, controllable assets. By the end of this book, you will have a seamless workflow between Blender and Godot which is specifically geared toward game development. Alongside, you’ll also be building a point-and-click adventure game following the instructions and guidance in the book. Finishing this game will help you take these newly acquired skills and create your own 3D games from conception to completion.

Who is this book for?

This book is for game developers who are looking to make the transition from 2D to 3D games. Readers should have a basic understanding of Godot, being able to navigate the UI, understand the inspector panel, create scenes, add scripts to game objects, and more. Previous experience with Blender is helpful but not required.

What you will learn

  • Discover what low-poly modeling is and why it matters
  • Understand how to use materials, shaders, and textures in your models
  • Explore how to render and animate a scene in Blender
  • Focus on how to export Blender assets and import them into Godot
  • Use 3D low-poly models in Godot to create fun games
  • Design a dynamic and easy-to-navigate game world
  • Explore how to interact with the game via interfaces
  • Understand how to export your game for Windows

This book is suitable for beginning and advanced users to learn how to use all blender tools efficiently. Easy-to-read step-by-step guides to create and design 3D Assets, levels, character controllers, user interface, sound, and animation. By the time you finish this book, you should be familiar with blender and able to create a small adventure game.

This book does a great job at introducing core concepts for 3D modeling and game development, showing what steps to take for various tasks, and even describing how to fix mistakes if you accidentally make any along the way. The book also makes sure to point out any Godot-specific issues with version 3.x and what might change in your workflow once Godot 4 is released, which is good for keeping the learning material relevant.Picking a point-and-click game as the example project was a great decision because the features and mechanics needed for that type of game cover all the basic 3D concepts while keeping the game itself simple. My only complaint would be how I expected more emphasis on exporting and using assets I made rather than using the provided ones, which would be a bit more relevant for indie developers who are more likely to have to make their own assets in their projects.

I'd say this book is a must for people who are trying to get into game development and want to use Blender to create their game assets. Blender may be the easiest to get into but it is still a very complicated system, which thankfully, this book tackles one at a time with examples the reader can follow so they aren't lost. I even learned some interesting things I didn't know about Blender until I've read this book. Definitely a go-to to those trying to navigate the intricate nature of game development and model creation.

This is a great book for people who are interested in learning Godot and want to start creating low poly 3d games. The pages of the book are nicely organized with screenshots and code blocks that make it very easy to separate the important elements. The book is kind of split into two halves, one being the Blender half and the other being the Godot half. The Blender half of the book will walk you through Blender basics and then have you create a low poly model, UV unwrap, texturing, creating procedurally generated materials and baking them to a texture, rigging, animation, and exporting. All of these things are essential to create game ready models.Once you get to the Godot side, you don’t really use the Blender knowledge anymore as the assets are provided to you through a github link at the beginning of the book. You will use premade assets to create a small adventure game. You will start with Godot basics and then get to some level design, working with materials and transparencies, lighting, post process effects, user interfaces, camera, character controller, animations, and sound.Although you don’t really use the Blender knowledge in the second half of the book, I think the knowledge is a worthy inclusion for beginners to make their own game after they finish the project in the book. Although you are using the included assets, there is nothing stopping you from creating your own with the information that is in the book. Some things to note, everything used in this book is free and open source software. This is great as it means there’s no additional cost to you to get started. The book suggests that you need Windows to follow along, but I didn’t really see any reason why you can’t follow along with Mac or Linux. The process should be the same across all platforms (other than the Configuring Windows export settings portion in the conclusion at the end). All in all, it is a very solid book. I was impressed with a lot of the things they run you through that most tutorials would skip over. Things like baking procedural materials to a texture map and setting up post processing effects are wonderful things to know for your game dev journey.

I am a few chapters in my reading of this book, and there's a lot that I like and appreciate about it so far. This book doesn't waste much time getting you to work on a project - this is GREAT for an eager-to-learn person like me. That said, it does so while explaining the necessary concepts and and reasonings behind each step., such as the thought process of how a 3D modeler might have when modeling an object. I felt like I got a better understanding of "Why" I'm doing what I'm doing instead of just following instruction. I'm also very appreciative for the reminders of external references that one can use to enhance their experience, i.e. referring to Blender's shortcut list (<---which is a HUUUGE game changer!). Instructions are written clearly and are easy to understand, and the tooltips add context that help for more understanding, although sometimes I wish there were a bit more visual representation of the UI to help visualize the instruction. The book does move at a good pace that I appreciate as someone who's willing to dive in to creating my own games and models.Nonetheless, I don't have much critique for this book. Overall, I really enjoyed the book; I would definitely recommend for a beginner who is trying to get into modeling and game development.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
