Chapter 2: Adding and Manipulating Objects

In the previous chapter, we discussed the importance of the Official Unity Programmer exam and what benefits it can produce for any developer who is looking to reassure either themselves or others in understanding programming in Unity. We also discussed the building blocks of being a programmer in general and our game's design brief.

As we are programmers working on a game engine, it is likely you will be working for a range of industries. In many of these industries, you will be issued with a technical brief/documentation (well, you should be!) for building an application. With this project, we are making a game, and the game design brief is effectively the blueprint for making this game. In this chapter, we will be applying the majority of our code, game objects, prefabs, and more based on the guidance of the brief and the game framework. We will be reminding ourselves of the brief and game framework during this chapter and will transfer specific information into our code.

With regard to our code, we will be covering the importance of interfaces and scriptable objects to help structure and uniform our code, preventing it from bloating unnecessarily, which we covered in Chapter 1, Setting Up and Structuring Our Project, with SOLID principles. We will also be getting used to the Unity Editor and becoming familiar with game objects, prefabs, and importing three-dimensional models to animate.

In this chapter, we'll be covering the following topics:

  • Setting up our Unity project
  • Introducing our interface (IActorTemplate)
  • Introducing our ScriptableObject (SOActorModel)
  • Setting up our Player, PlayerSpawner, and PlayerBullet scripts
  • Planning and creating our enemy
  • Setting up our EnemySpawner and enemy script

This book is a fantastic resource for game developers looking to study for the Unity Certified Programmer exam. through a set of cohesive and comprehensive examples the reader learns both the skills and information needed to pass the exam but also practical application of that knowledge. This book covers some very important software engineering concepts like SOLID principles, dependency Injection, and game design documentation, It covers Scriptable objects, several design patterns that are commonly used in game development and software development as a whole, and concepts like ray casting, UI, particle effects, audio, and performance testing.The book is comprised of 14 chapters, with the last chapter containing a full mock exam for the reader to take as practice for the actual Unity Certified Programmer Exam. There are several smaller Mock Tests through out the books other 13 chapters as well to test and reinforce your knowledge.I found the book to be an enjoyable way to learn the information needed for the exam and highly recommend the book!

I've used tutorials, youtube videos, chat gpt, but what I'm lacking was a project that brought it all together. The author is very thorough with the instructions on how to make a mobile and pc game with a shop to earn real money. Brilliant book, thank you very much!

After reviewing several guides on building games recently, this was one of the better products. Packt’s Unity Certified Programmer Exam Guide, 2nd Ed, by Philip Walker takes the reader through every step necessary to prepare for the Unity CP exam. Each chapter guides through the desired objectives, and many chapters include test questions with a full exam in the last chapter. Rather than simply discussing various study topics, Walker guides the reader in building their own game program so they can understand how the various elements apply, and why they are important in the exam context. One of my bigger problems is that while the chapters build, configuring the book as sections would have made for better restudy. The first chapter covers the basics of the exam and loading the Unity packages into the local system. It acquaints the user with a basic architectural model and introduces a UML-based structure that is used throughout the book. The next three chapters deal with structuring the environment in which the game will take place through object manipulation and animation. Chapters 5-8 expand into some of the essential elements of the mobile game, building a shop for continual upgrades and dealing with advertisements. These elements help the user to monetize a game and are an essential part of the Unity structure. Each area is exhaustively detailed using a code approach as well as screenshots showing the interaction with the Unity platform. The actual layout deals with integrating a shop into the game and making sure the game loops to keep the customer playing. The final four learning chapters, 9-13, add some advanced skills based on building an in-game HUD showing score, lives, and pause functions as well as optimizing the performance. The book includes a step by step to test for each stage and ensure the aspects like light, physics, and sound are structured with the in-play element. The last chapter includes a full mock test with 102 questions. This was an excellent book to prepare for the Unity exam. The structure with building an actual game enables the learner to put the skills into play rather than simply reading descriptions and definitions. I would highly recommend this to any game developer looking to take this exam, or even to learn the basics of the Unity framework.
