Dealing with your first cyber attack
The new CIO and CISO will have many moments that test themselves. As I have noted, these moments will build your confidence and help define your brand. A real test is to be able to remain calm when you encounter a cyber-attack. As you are new in your role, there will be many aspects that you do not yet understand.
For each CIO and CISO, the first serious incident that you face is always going to be a terrific test of your leadership and how you can drive a positive outcome from a negative situation. I recall in my first few weeks as a CISO that there was an attack against the SWIFT payment network. There had been some significant SWIFT attacks at the Bank of Bangladesh, and this was running laps in my head.
As a new CISO, I did not have a relationship with the SWIFT CISO, nor had I met the payments executives in my orientation. This was all to change quickly. A crisis incident meeting was called, and few details were clear and understood....
