Moodle 1.9 Multimedia

Chapter 2. Picture This

This chapter will essentially focus on creating and editing pictures for the course Music for an everyday life, which includes finding free pictures online, making photo collages, and comic strips, or just simple screenshots and slideshows. We will also have a look at some basic photography concepts so that we can start creating and enhancing some nice photos for our course.

By the end of this chapter you will be able to:

  • Use a set of free software tools for common procedures in picture editing

  • Create and edit photos for the course

  • Select appropriate image formats according to your needs

  • Integrate images in Moodle

Finding free pictures online

Reinventing the wheel, especially for teachers, is a great path to burn-out. Creating pictures for our courses (photos, drawings, and icons), if we are working from scratch, is extremely time-consuming, adding to the course design effort, interaction with students, or worse, assessment. Fortunately, we are not working alone anymore, as there are many places on the Web where, with the help of millions, we can get ready-made pictures, for free (well, sometimes searching for a nice picture can take a while, but it can be worth the effort!). But first, let's take a look at the basic image formats, before we go on to see the places where we can find free online pictures.

The basics of image formats

There are some things that we should know about image formats, particularly how to choose the best formats for our Moodle courses. There are many formats around, but the good news is that we will just need to use four of these in our daily life:

  • GIF: It's an old format...

Moodle it!

Inserting images in Moodle is really easy. Now that we have a source of free pictures for our course, there are several ways to insert them, depending on the type of resource or activity that we are using. We will have a look at the following three ways in this book:

  • Uploading images as attachments (for example, in forums, glossaries, or databases).

  • Using the built-in HTML editor and the course files area to store the images.

  • Embedding HTML code (specific for images) on web forms. (Don't be scared, it's easy and can be helpful on some occasions, just as we saw with YouTube videos. We will use it later in Chapter 5 for adding pictures to Google Maps, for example).

For now, let's just look at the first two ways of inserting images.

Uploading images as attachments

Using attachments is the easiest way to add a picture to Moodle. This possibility is available for some activities in Moodle, such as the forum, glossary, and database, and it's the easiest way for students to submit their...

Capturing and enhancing pictures using GIMP

The usual cliché "a picture is worth more than a thousand words" sometimes convinces me. Especially, if we are talking about our students creating these images, by photographing, drawing, or making collages, and discussing these with their peers. Using strong images to introduce themes is a great starter and a nice context to question students. Pictures seem to resonate with many students in textbooks, course material, illustrating reports, raw material for photo stories or story boards, and as assignment products in general. Give students a digital camera and they'll just start photographing and filming without any limitations. And now it's quick and cheap to take even a thousand photos.

As teachers, we also use a lot of pictures in presentations, exams and exercises, department or club panels, to photograph experiments, activities and students' works, to create mascots made of collages, and many other things. I did all of this as a teacher,...

Capturing screenshots

Capturing screenshots can be very useful if we are:

  • Creating a "how to" document on using a computer application and we need to illustrate the procedures

  • Creating a presentation about some online resources and showing how they look (assuming that we don't have an Internet connection during the presentation)

  • Getting some frames from a video (for example, a DVD or a Web based video)

  • Keeping records of webshots (website screenshots) that we find interesting, in order to post on our blog or in Moodle (for example, a portfolio of some websites that we have developed)

We can take screenshots in one of the following two ways:

  • By using the Print Screen function supported by the majority of computers (and keyboards) to capture the entire screen or a specific application window, and then save it as an image using GIMP

  • By using Jing (http://www.jingproject.com/) to directly capture a region of the screen (and insert callouts on it, such as the screenshots used in this book!)

Now it...

Creating comic strips using Strip Generator

Comics are a great way of telling a story. They can be used to:

  • Create hypothetical situations that could happen in real life (for example, a conflict or a funny situation)

  • Create a storyboard for a movie

  • Narrate an event

If you are getting worried that we will have to draw something and your skills are, well, those of a 10 year old kid, that's not a problem, as mine aren't that good either! Fortunately, there's a tool just for you and me, called Strip Generator, which will save us from further humiliation in front of our students and colleagues. In our course in Moodle, in Module 5 Being a musician, we will design an activity where students have to create a story based on a day in the life of a musician, and they will be required to use this tool to illustrate this. As we will be using a comic strip, we will be drawing the results in an image. We can then add this work to the Moodle course easily, as an attachment to a forum.

Strip generator (http...

Creating slideshows

Slideshows are a great way of presenting information and supporting discussions; so we will have a look at the following things that can be useful in Moodle courses:

  • How to convert PowerPoint slides to images, in order to integrate them in a Moodle lesson

  • How to share our presentations through an online service called Slideshare, and then embed our presentations in Moodle

  • How to create photo slideshows on the Web to later embed them in a Moodle resource or activity

Exporting PowerPoint slides as images to build Moodle lessons

An easy way to create an exercise in our Moodle courses is to build a lesson around a presentation that we used in class, for example, in Microsoft PowerPoint. This will provide the content, and then we can add some questions, working with the existing material and not having to rebuild it again in the Moodle lesson. The easiest way to do this is to convert the PowerPoint (or similar) presentation to images and then add these images to branch tables...

Summary

In this chapter, we started by seeing how to find free pictures online to add to our course materials (and assignments, from a students' perspective) in services such as Flickr and Wikimedia Commons. We then had a look at different ways of inserting images in Moodle, especially using the HTML editor image upload function. We then started using GIMP for main image editing tasks, such as cropping, resizing, capturing (together with some photography concepts), color correction, photo collage, and saving the images in different formats. Some issues regarding images in Moodle, such as file formats and appropriate sizes, were also discussed, and we used the Print Screen function and Jing to collect screenshots. Strip generator was also used to easily create comic strips. We also learned how to export PowerPoint presentations to images, adding them to a Moodle lesson, or as an alternative publishing these presentations in Slideshare. We concluded this chapter by looking at ways to create...

Description

In today's world, multimedia can provide a more engaging experience for learners. You can embed your own audio, link to pages off-site, or pull a YouTube video into your course. You can use feature-rich quizzes that allow you to assess your students, or provide them with tools and feedback to test their own knowledge. All these require standard procedures and cutting-edge tools. Selecting tools to make multimedia integration in Moodle faster, simpler, and more precise is not child's play. This book provides you with everything you need to include sound, video, animation, and more in your Moodle courses. You'll develop Moodle courses that you are proud of, and that your students enjoy. This book covers integration of multimedia into Moodle, covering major multimedia elements such as images, audio, and video. It will take you through these elements in detail where you will learn how to create, edit, and integrate these elements into Moodle. The book is written around the design of an online course called "Music for Everyday Life" using Moodle, where teachers and students create, share, and discuss multimedia elements. You will also learn how to use Web 2.0 tools to create images, audio, and video and then we will take a look at the web applications that allow easy creation, collaboration, and sharing of multimedia elements. Finally, you will learn how to interact with students in real-time using a particular online phone service and a desktop sharing application.

Who is this book for?

The book is primarily aimed at teachers and trainers who run professional courses and have experience in the use of Moodle. At the same time, it is not necessary to have an advanced technical background to create multimedia elements, as the tasks will be simple and as little time consuming as possible, relevant to everyday use.

What you will learn

  • Create and edit images, drawings, screenshots, sound, and music and integrate them into Moodle
  • Learn the basic procedures to create videos with simple equipment for course delivery
  • Download and publish videos from online video-sharing services
  • Convert between several video formats and integrate them into Moodle
  • Create multimedia elements such as interactive floor planners, online maps, and timelines using Web 2.0 tools and blend them with Moodle
  • Integrate multimedia elements in quizzes and lessons to make learning more interactive and fun
  • Create interactive exercises that can be assessed using software such as Hot Potatoes and JClic
  • Interact with students in real-time using a particular online phone service and a desktop sharing application

I recommend this book for any Instructional Designer, Corporate Trainer, or Teacher looking to increase engagement in their eLearning courses by taking advantage of multimedia tools. Not only does it teach you about many great tools freely available on the web but it also teaches you how to configure Moodle so that you can make the most out of those tools. Even a seasoned instructional design veteran can learn about a new multimedia tool or two from this book.I wrote more about this book at the link below:[...]

I've used Moodle for about four years, and in that time I've found it to be an exceptionally useful, high-functioning and user-friendly learning management system (LMS). In my view, the one deficiency in its suite of resources is that is is less than intuitive in the way it enables administrators, teachers, and learners create, integrate, manage, and deliver images, audio, video, animations and more.Enter Packt Publishing's Moodle 1.9 Multimedia by João Pedro Soares Fernandes.I opened my copy of the text with a high expectation that it would be an informative and practical reference text. Why? Packt Publishing have been providing Moodle reference books for some time now, and their texts are usually either very good or excellent. Now read on...Using open source software can be a daunting experience, regardless of your technical or business experience, and this text's purpose is to shorten Moodle users' path to competency in designing, developing and delivering multimedia on the platform. Broadly speaking, the text covers seven Moodle-related media-based activities:* Evolution of Multimedia* Using Images* Sound and Music* Video* Web 2.0 and other multimedia forms* Multimedia and Assessments* Synchronous Communication and InteractionThe author assumes previous knowledge of Moodle, but not prior experience of multimedia development. Appropriately for a book about Moodle, Fernandes uses an Constructivist approach to instruction, and the content is structured so that the reader learns experientially - you learn by doing. This is a very good idea indeed: for newcomers this goes some way to providing an understanding of why multimedia in Moodle 1.9 looks and works the way it does, it acts as a pertinent reminder for experienced Moodlers, and sets the context for the content creation chapters in the book. The book is designed in a logical and linear fashion: the author aims to guide you through the basics of content creation in each featured media type. For example, in Chapter 2: Picture This you find out about using the open source image editing called GIMP to capture and enhance images, integrate images into Moodle, create comic strips using the free-to-use Strip Generator, export PowerPoint create slideshows, and use online resources like SlideShare.Given the assumption of little or no technical background in multimedia development, the author spends a goodly proportion of his time - in detail and very effectively - spelling out the advantages, and disadvantages of various media types, as well a processes, "how-to's" and "gotchas" of using digital media in Moodle. With nearly 12 years experience as an learning professional specializing in e-learning, I would consider that I have a pretty comprehensive knowledge of digital media tools, technologies, and services. I'm delighted to say that Moodle 1.9 Multimedia introduced me to a range of resources that I had not encountered before. This is great: any resource that enables me to deliver content to learners in a more engaging and immersive fashion is a winner with me, and this book fits comfortably into that category. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I think that Moodle 1.9 Multimedia would be an invaluable companion for those new to using media on the Moodle platform. As an experienced Moodle user (and media expert), I will use the book very much as a "just enough, just in time" resource rather than as an end-to-end guide through image, sound, and video development, though I would suggest that the text would work very well if used in this fashion. Some other positive aspects of my "user experience" of the text included the author's accessible and direct writing style, and the availability of a sample Moodle course for learners to access and "have a play with." In my view this text is a straightforward and reliable companion for those who seek to find out more about - and use - multimedia in Moodle 1.9.Five Stars--

Great. I just took a 2 hour introduction class to Moodle's possibilities. I felt I needed more guidance in order to incorporate technology. Perfect.
