Key benefits

  • Learn the fundamentals of NoSQL databases with MongoDB
  • Create, manage, and optimize a MongoDB database in the cloud using Atlas
  • Use a real-world dataset to gain practical experience of handling big data

Description

MongoDB is one of the most popular database technologies for handling large collections of data. This book will help MongoDB beginners develop the knowledge and skills to create databases and process data efficiently. Unlike other MongoDB books, MongoDB Fundamentals dives into cloud computing from the very start – showing you how to get started with Atlas in the first chapter. You will discover how to modify existing data, add new data into a database, and handle complex queries by creating aggregation pipelines. As you progress, you'll learn about the MongoDB replication architecture and configure a simple cluster. You will also get to grips with user authentication, as well as techniques for backing up and restoring data. Finally, you'll perform data visualization using MongoDB Charts. You will work on realistic projects that are presented as bitesize exercises and activities, allowing you to challenge yourself in an enjoyable and attainable way. Many of these mini-projects are based around a movie database case study, while the last chapter acts as a final project where you will use MongoDB to solve a real-world problem based on a bike-sharing app. By the end of this book, you'll have the skills and confidence to process large volumes of data and tackle your own projects using MongoDB.

Who is this book for?

This book is designed for people who are new to MongoDB. It is suitable for developers, database administrators, system administrators, and cloud architects who are looking to use MongoDB for smooth data processing in the cloud. Although not necessary, basic knowledge of a general programming language and experience with other databases will help you grasp the topics covered more easily.

What you will learn

  • Set up and use MongoDB Atlas on the cloud
  • Insert, update, delete, and retrieve data from MongoDB
  • Build aggregation pipelines to perform complex queries
  • Optimize queries using indexes
  • Monitor databases and manage user authorization
  • Improve scalability and performance with sharding clusters
  • Replicate clusters, back up your database, and restore data
  • Create data-driven charts and reports from real-time data

This book was great for getting familiar with MongoDB. I was looking for a book to map what I know about traditional RDBMS's to Mongo, and this worked very well. The last few chapters in the book didn't quite meet my expectations but the first many more than made up for that. After reading this book, I feel like I have a good understanding of how Mongo works from the perspective of a developer and where I might want to use it - or not use it.

This book helped me learn MongoDB.I usually use MySQL, or more recently PostgreSQL. I wanted to understand NoSQL languages and heard a lot about MongoDB. The comparisons between Relational and Non-Relational DB's were really helpful for me to understand why I might use one over the other.Overall, this book was a very long, but pleasant, read. And, along with learning a massive amount about MongoDB itself, I also learned a lot of new things about DB replication, query optimization, and Node.js.After reading it, I love how easy it is to reference back to it whenever I run into trouble.100% would recommend to anyone wanting to learn, or just wanting a good reference source for MongoDB.

As someone who has been using MongoDB for several years now, I like to take a step back every once in awhile and check out some beginner or fundamentals type books to see if there's anything I missed with version changes, new features, etc. and also to see what's covered.I feel that MongoDB Fundamentals threaded the needle as it were. I think there's some great sections covering database theory, both from a relational database perspective and for NoSQL/Document data stores. This helps set up the concepts that are explored throughout the book and helps make the book accessible to those who don't have a strong database background.I personally found the points around Atlas very helpful, as I haven't used Atlas myself in Production. Also found the introductions to sharding and replica sets very helpful for those with less experience with distributed systems. All in all, I'd say job well done here on writing a book that's very accessible to those looking to learn MongoDB, while also being very helpful to those who may know more then a little, but want to get started learning more on a specific part of MongoDB. I heartily recommend this book for those looking to learn more about MongoDB and/or MongoDB Atlas, this book will server you well as you get started.
