The Fundamentals of Observability
As we go through this book, some concepts and terms will be used repeatedly, so we want to pause here and explain all the concepts that will serve as building blocks for other chapters. You may already be familiar with logs, metrics, traces, service views, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and Configuration Management Databases (CMDBs), but we still recommend that you read through this chapter because we are presenting these concepts with respect to observability – how they come into the picture here and who owns them.
If this is the first time you have come across any of these terms, don’t worry if they don’t make much sense to you on the first read. As you proceed with other chapters, your understanding of how these concepts deliver value will be enhanced.
