Why are behavioral questions asked in an interview?

Behavioral interview questions are asked to help the interviewer gain insight into how you have handled past situations at work, which can help them see how you might handle similar situations in their company.

Many behavioral questions you are asked in interviews start with phrases similar to the following:

  • Describe a situation where you…
  • How did you handle [situation]?
  • Give me an example of…
  • Tell me about a time when you…

Before going into an interview, we suggest you review the job posting and identify the keywords that the employer has listed. This can help you tailor your answers to behavioral interview questions by using some of the keywords from the job description.

Also, I recommend doing a self-assessment to identify 5-10 key skills that you have, and then identify situations where you have used those skills. For example, perhaps you are a good communicator...
