Collecting KeePass password hashes
KeePass is a little different from the other vault types we will discuss, so we will cover it first. KeePass is an open source product (downloads and source are available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/keepass/) and its focus and strengths surround its ability to work offline and locally to your machine. This differs from LastPass and 1Password, which use a cloud-based solution for password storage. Contained on your device, KeePass uses a password database file, a single file secured with a vault password or keyfile. The appeal here for some is complete control over your password data (and given some of the recent data breaches surrounding cloud-based password products, this is certainly a worthy perspective to have) by having your KeePass database and dependencies reside locally on your device – and only your device.
