Remediation for Accessibility in PDF Publications
This chapter will provide an overview and the steps needed to make PDF publications accessible. International standards define the purpose and legal requirements for the information presented online to address the unique needs of readers with visual, hearing, and motor skill impairments. Part of the solution is specialized software and devices to convert visual information to synthesized speech, or an alternative format that is perceivable to those readers. It all starts with PDF accessibility tags.
You will learn what accessibility is, how to include accessibility features when authoring a publication, and how to test and remediate it if needed. The following topics will be considered in this chapter:
- What is accessibility in a PDF publication?
- The principles of building an accessible document during the authoring stages
- Understanding the Tags pane and tags
- Working with accessibility tools
