Cutting the grooves
The grooves are going to serve as tracks that allow for the lid to slide for the box to open and close securely. The structure of these grooves will be an overhang, and as discussed in Chapter 11, creating overhangs often requires the need for support material. However, placing support material in these grooves may make a rougher surface which would reduce the functionality of the box. Fortunately, the grooves will be very small with a minimum overhang that should be manufacturable without needing any support.
Before we model the grooves, let’s change our viewing angle so that we are looking at the right side of the box from a 2D orthographic view, as shown in Figure 16.6:
