When we planned how to close out this book, and I was assigned the final chapter, I said to myself, “Don’t use it.” That reflex was because I thought that even if there are people out there who have never seen it, using a well-worn phrase might be seen as a lazy way to start this chapter. And nothing raises the keen instincts of our wonderful editor more than laziness. No doubt she would pull out her sharp pen and strike it through.
It is a quote that has been so overused that it invites derision. It is so derided that the person associated with it is probably more famous for saying it than for what he did for a career. So many businesspeople have succumbed to the too-easy temptation to use the quote when attempting to get corporate laughs that it’s almost become a meme. But I’m human and so my fortitude is weak and I’m going to use it anyway. Deride away.
