To decide whether we should use a grid or whether we should pursue an alternative, the following list can be helpful.
Grids work well for the following use cases:
- Websites or applications with a lot of content that needs structure and should be visually pleasing and straightforward to understand
- When we want to add consistency to our design in terms of sizes, hierarchies, and white space
- When designing for responsive layouts that need to work on many different screen sizes
- When creating data-heavy interfaces such as analytics dashboards or data management software, where a lot of information should be presented in a clear, consistent layout that is quick to scan
Grid alternatives work best for the following use cases:
