Working with map templates
By default, every new map document created by the ArcMap application is based on the Blank Map normal template that contains a single empty data frame named Layers, as shown in the following screenshot:
A template contains a designed map layout with one or more map bodies (data frames) and standard map elements such as legends, graphic scales, graticules, informative texts, and map title. ArcGIS for Desktop includes a lot of templates for different page sizes, and standard map layouts such as Industry, World, and USA, as shown in the following screenshot:
The USA and World templates include datasets. In a template, you can change the size and position of the map elements within the layout.
Applying a map template
In this subsection, we will use the same cartographic design principles and datasets used in the section named Working with the map layout. We will apply a standard template named PortraitModernInset.mxd
from the ArcMap templates collection.
