Storage Spaces Direct is the Microsoft implementation of software-defined storage that comes with Windows Server 2016. This technology uses servers with local-attached drives to create highly available storage for a smaller price than traditional Storage Array Network (SAN) solutions. Storage Spaces Direct can be deployed in two different architecture, Converged and Hyper-Converged. Converged is used in scenarios where you want to use separate clusters for storage and compute, while Hyper-Converged give you the ability to use same cluster for storage and compute.
