Introduction to computer networking

The idea of making two computers able to talk is fundamental to networking. A single computer can contain valuable information; for that information to be available to another computer or computers, there needs to be a connection between the computer with the information and the computer that needs that information. The process of making these computers communicate to share information is called networking.

Computer networking can be classified into two major categories:

  • Local Area Network (LAN): A LAN is a small network of computers within an enclosed environment. The network of computers within an office or within a school premises all fall under LAN. A LAN can be either a wired or a wireless network. Wired means that a network cable is used to connect the computers and other network devices together.
