Implementing Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations

Implementation Methodology and Tools

In the first chapter, you learned about Microsoft Dynamics 365, its various apps/services/offerings, their capabilities, and the disruption in the way business apps are going to be leveraged. From this chapter onward, we will focus solely on the implementation process, architecture, various tools, features, and best practices of Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition.

After you have chosen to implement Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition in your organization and decided on the partner to assist you in this implementation journey, one major decision for the customer and the vendor is to decide the implementation strategy. Let's now learn how to lay down the foundation for your project success. Whether it is an ERP implementation or any other major business transformation...

Why select a methodology?

Methodology is a systematic theoretical analysis of methods applied to achieve one or many goals. This systematic study of methods with a clear process and coupled with best practices ensures a higher success rate for goal attainment. However, a methodology does not guarantee success and hence needs to be customized and refined over the course of the cycle to ensure that it adapts to any changes in an enterprise environment.

A methodology comprises various tools and techniques, such as phased workflows, individual process workflows, process procedures, templates, samples, aids, instructions, responsibility, accountability, authority, risks and issues, and many more, all carried out to deliver the product or service.

By managing every program undertaken in a repeatable manner, your team gains efficiency, works smarter, and can build an environment of continuous...

Methodologies relevant for embracing Dynamics 365

The choice of methodology selection is limited but needs to be done carefully. The primary methodologies of Dynamics 365 are as follows:

  • CRP: This is the latest methodology recommended by Microsoft and other advisers to embrace and implement Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition (AX). As this is a blend of agile and waterfall, one can smartly use this methodology to achieve goals of all sizes, big or small.
  • Agile: This methodology is good in some scenarios, such as support and enhancements. However, for a greenfield initiative of implementing Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition (AX), this may not be so useful. When the project duration is short and goals are clearly defined and non-changeable, this methodology will be found useful.
  • Waterfall: This is the traditional...

Lifecycle Services (LCS) -- implementation tools

Microsoft Dynamics Lifecycle Services (LCS) provide a cloud-based collaborative workspace that customers and partners can use to manage implementations by simplifying and standardizing the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition implementations.

LCS is a must-have tool for all Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition implementations and helps in improving the predictability and quality of implementations, thereby enabling business value faster. LCS provides regularly updated services. The goal of LCS is to deliver the right information, at the right time and to the right people, and to help ensure repeatable and predictable success with each roll-out of an implementation, update, or upgrade.

LCS is available to customers, partners as well potential prospects. While customers and partners...

Resources

We would like to share some resources, which every person using Microsoft Dynamics 365 should be aware of and always keep visiting:

Summary

In this chapter, you learned about the importance of a methodology and the various choices of methodologies available. Conference Room Pilot (CRP) is clearly preferred and the recommended option, while organizations can adapt to any other methodology depending on the organization culture and project requirements.

We introduced important tools while embracing Dynamics 365, such as LCS. LCS has a plethora of tools to benefit from and derive value in your implementation. We expect Microsoft to enhance these tool's existing capabilities. We also expect new functionality additions to benefit customers and partners worldwide and to lay a strong foundation of successful adoption of Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition (AX) as the platform of choice to run their businesses.

Understanding the architecture is critical to know how the system...

This book had a lot of good information in it about Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations and the differences from AX 2012. Most of it was easy to read, as I had expected from the authors' prior Implementation guide for AX 2012. It seems to have been a bit rushed in getting published as it was not closely edited, especially in the second half of the book. There were many typos and grammar issues that distracted from the content in some sections.

Now I remember why I stopped reading this book by about page 40 back when I first bought it. Buzzwords and hype. Everything "empowers" users, is "seamless", "purpose-built", takes things "to the next level", and leads to sought-after "disruption" and "transformation". Everything is achieved "easily", and will increase "productivity".I may keep trudging through the hyperbole and aggressively-in-your-face sales pitch, but who knows.---------------------I did keep going, and now am raising my rating from 2 to 4. There is a lot of useful information in the book. If a native English speaker had reviewed the text and made the many hundreds of small changes needed, and they refrained from early on sounding like a sales pitch, then I'd probably give it a 5.

I had much higher expectations from this book on how to setup Dynamics. I received the book yesterday, have read through the first 5 chapters, which have discussed the authors preferences in project management. The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 is because there are some useful parts like the discussion around the Lifecycle Services. I find the sections explaining how to have a meeting and who should be at a meeting and what attitude each person should have to be a bit... lets just leave it at "annoying." I've read over 200 pages so far and only about 5 pages are useful so far.* I'll update my review after I finish

Wow and I thought I was technically up to date - I cant understand a word!!!!!!!! It's a pity the book cover does not WARN you - it makes claims to cover the various tasks but gives no indication that you have to know some language that I am not able to read. Since I am a CPA I thought this book would be helpful not unintelligible to a mere accountant. All I want to do is what the book says it will teach you - but it seems you have to have expertise BEFORE you read the book!!! You certainly can't learn from the book. I have a client who has implemented Dynamics 365 and wants out - after the implementation. He called a Solutions Provider and was told they are too small for the program - so what is Microsoft trying to do?If this is the future of Microsoft accounting software then perhaps I should advise my clients to not go with Dynamics but stick with QuickBooks.Anyway I have wasted the $37 because I don't think they refund me after suckering me to buy this book."Implementing Microsoft Dynamics 365" is a misnomer - it should be "Expertise for the already expert" ??Of course I can't judge this because I am not expert enough to read the book.
