In this chapter, we have highlighted the importance of proper documentation and diagramming, discussing how documentation helps serve as a guide to new staff or as a reference to the network administrator himself at a later date. We also illustrated some common examples of diagrams that administrators require (such as rack diagrams), and discussed the importance of these diagrams in maintaining and understanding a network. We also discussed critical concepts related to business continuity and disaster management, showing how redundancy forms the cornerstone of modern, highly available networks, allowing core functions to continue in spite of the failure of a single component.
