An Atypical ASP.NET Core 6 Design Patterns Guide

Introduction

The goal of this book is not to create yet another design pattern book; instead, the chapters are organized according to scale and topic, allowing you to start small with a strong foundation and build slowly upon it, in just the same way that you would build a program.

Instead of this being a guide that covers a few ways of applying a design pattern, we will explore the thought processes behind the systems we are designing from a software engineer’s point of view.

This is not a magic recipe book, and from experience, there is no magic recipe when designing software; there is only your logic, knowledge, experience, and analytical skills. Let’s define “experience” as your past successes and failures. And don’t worry, you will fail during your career, but don’t get discouraged by it. The faster you fail, the faster you can recover and learn, leading to successful products. Many techniques covered in this book should help...

What is a design pattern?

Since you just purchased a book about design patterns, I guess that you have some idea of what design patterns are, but let’s just make sure that we are on the same page.

Abstract definition: A design pattern is a proven technique that can be used to solve a specific problem.

In this book, we will apply different patterns to solve different problems and leverage some open source tools to go further, faster! Abstract definitions make people sound intelligent and all, but there is no better way to learn than by experimenting with something, and design patterns are no different.

If that definition does not make sense to you yet, don’t worry. You should have enough information by the end of the book to correlate the multiple practical examples and explanations with that definition, making it clear enough.

I like to compare programming to playing with LEGO® because what you have to do is generally the same: put small pieces together...

Anti-patterns and code smells

Anti-patterns and code smells are architectural bad practices or tips about possible bad design. Learning about best practices is as important as learning about bad ones, which is where we start. There are multiple anti-patterns and code smells throughout the book to help you get started.

Anti-patterns

An anti-pattern is the opposite of a design pattern: it is a proven flawed technique that will most likely cause you some trouble and cost you time and money (and probably give you a headache or two along the way).

An anti-pattern is a pattern that seems to be a good idea and that seems to be the solution you were looking for, but that in the end will most likely cause more harm than good. Some anti-patterns started as legitimate design patterns and were labeled anti-patterns later. Sometimes, it is a matter of opinion, and sometimes the classification can be influenced by the programming language.

Let’s look at an example next. We...

Key benefits

  • Apply the SOLID architectural principles and software design patterns effectively with a focus on dependency injection
  • Discover modern application architectures such as vertical slice, clean architecture, and event-driven microservices
  • Explore full-stack ASP.NET Core with an overview of Blazor

Description

An Atypical ASP.NET Core 6 Design Patterns Guide, Second Edition approaches programming like playing with LEGO®: snapping small pieces together to create something beautiful. Thoroughly updated for ASP.NET Core 6, with further coverage of microservices patterns, data contracts, and event-driven architecture, this book gives you the tools to build and glue reliable components together to improve your programmatic masterpieces. The chapters are organized based on scale and topic, allowing you to start small and build on a strong base, the same way that you would develop a program. You will begin by exploring basic design patterns, SOLID architectural principles, dependency injection, and other ASP.NET Core 6 mechanisms. You will explore component-scale patterns, and then move to higher level application-scale patterns and techniques to better structure your applications. Finally, you'll advance to the client side to connect the dots with tools like Blazor and make ASP.NET Core a viable full-stack web development framework. You will supplement your learning with practical use cases and best practices, exploring a range of significant Gang of Four (GoF) design patterns along the way. By the end of the book, you will be comfortable combining and implementing patterns in different ways, and crafting software solutions of any scale.

Who is this book for?

The book is intended for intermediate software and web developers with an understanding of .NET who want to write flexible, maintainable, and robust code for building scalable web applications. Knowledge of C# programming and an understanding of web concepts like HTTP is necessary.

What you will learn

  • Apply the SOLID principles for building flexible and maintainable software
  • Get to grips with .NET dependency injection
  • Work with GoF design patterns such as strategy, decorator, façade, and composite
  • Explore the MVC patterns for designing web APIs and web applications using Razor
  • Discover layering techniques and tenets of clean architecture
  • Become familiar with CQRS and vertical slice architecture as an alternative to layering
  • Understand microservices patterns and when they can benefit your applications
  • Build ASP.NET user interfaces from server-side to client-side Blazor

The book arrived early, in good condition. The author has clearly written ideas, with relatable examples that aren't overly technical, but get his point across. There's a Discord channel if you have questions or get stuck, which is nice, and the code is available if you want to follow along/see how to do it in more depth. I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about Design Patterns without using the standard, hard to understand examples that aren't applicable in the real world.

I was so lost on understanding advanced architectures .NET Core supports and this book presented them in a way that made sense to me. It also provides many use cases to various architectural patterns. Each example has test demonstration and is evaluated against competing solutions. Can't recommend it enough.

This book had a refreshingly different take on how to write code and be a professional full stack developer. It seemed to be split into two sections which built up nicely: -The first section concentrated on concepts, best practices, and even anti-patterns. These were described as well as giving hints about code smells and what they represent with potential regard to technical debt.It comprehensively covers testing in a common-sense approach demonstrating the how and why.Unit Testing is an incredibly important skill as a professional developer and is often neglected in books. There is a good description of SOLID (along with what the letters mean which no one can ever remember), KISS/DRY.Good API design was nicely described along with best practices for routing and structing them securely with guards. The second section concentrated more on design patterns. The choice of patterns represented the most common one’s developers will come across and included CQRS and vertical slices which are currently fashionable. There is an interesting section on MediatR and how and why it is used.Razor was well covered and Blazor as the front end was interesting to read about, but I thought could possibly have appeared earlier in the book. Whilst none of my current projects are using that, it is always good to see alternatives written about.Overall, I really liked this book and whilst for full disclosure I was given a review copy, it is one that I can see myself re-reading multiple times.

I've worked in the Software Industry for about 20 years now, and I can honestly say, this book does a great job of organizing information into more "easily digestible" bits so that someone coming along new can start to learn. I didn't actually learn anything new from reading it, but I appreciate the content and structure of the book, and the clear experience of the Author in both comprehending the technology and his ability to articulate and share that knowledge. One of the things I like in the book is how he breaks down concepts when needed, but also isn't pedantic, so a seasoned reader can brush up on topics and not feel like the information is too basic. That being said, it's definitely a book intended for the Beginner to Intermediate levels of Developer to help them start expanding their knowledge into a larger scope of engineering and architectural reasoning. This book will aid in helping early professionals to bridge the gap between the "developer" and the Software Engineer/Architect.My favorite overall experience about the content is that the author takes the time to explain relevant side-topics, but doesn't overburden the reader with every detail, rather, points them to necessary resources to allow them to expand on their knowledge. Sometimes just making sure the reader knows that something exists, rather than passing over it because it's not the focus of the book, can leave blanks in the learning process. I've always agreed with the concept, "you don't know what you don't know", and this book is good about at least bringing light to nuances that seasoned developers implicitly understand or recognize.
