Summary

You have climbed the mountain and must contemplate what is next. Retirement and not climbing any more mountains is an option we all face now. Taking a proactive approach to planning your retirement and how you will retire is just like planning other stages of your career.

There are career options available to the retired CIO or CISO, such as board roles and board advisory, and other alternatives such as consulting. These roles can use your experience; however, you will still have to consider and learn how to change your approach, as this requires some subtle change.

Planning the transition is key, and you must adapt as you will have done throughout your career. Paul McCartney of the Beatles wrote The Long and Winding Road as he looked upon a road stretching into the hills in Scotland. Your life and your career are symbolized by the twists and turns that you take up your mountain.

Enjoy the journey.
