Learning the basics of extensions
SketchUp is an amazingly easy-to-learn 3D modeling software. One of the main reasons it is so easy for so many people to learn is that it keeps things simple. All the tools work in a similar fashion and there are no superfluous commands or UIs.
The downside to this simplified approach is that SketchUp tends to stay somewhat generic in its toolset. Now, this is great if you want a 3D modeling tool used by architects, landscape designers, video game designers, and more. With this simplified approach to 3D modeling (everything you model is just a collection of edges and faces), anyone can model anything in SketchUp. On the flip side of that coin, however, is the fact that there are no tools to make the specific item you might need in your model.
