Web GIS is an implementation of modern GIS and has been around for many years, but has had exponential growth recently. It was once only found within large organizations and governments, because web GIS required complex relational database management systems (RDBMS), GIS, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server software, the hardware to run them, and the people to maintain these systems. With the emergence of cloud architecture, individuals and organizations can now deploy a web GIS without having to manage all the overhead. Esri created a web GIS platform called ArcGIS Online that is hosted in the cloud and is fully integrated into ArcGIS Pro.
