To get the most out of this book

In Chapters 2-5, each of the four instructional design competencies is discussed. The structure of each chapter is the same, with the hopes of respecting busy readers’ time, as well as keeping the reader engaged. Each chapter covers the following:

  • An explanation of what each competency in the model means as it relates to the field of instructional design
  • Why it’s important to build your skills in this specific area as an instructional designer
  • A real-world case study highlighting the competency at play (or not at play) – and what went right or wrong
  • Ways to build that specific instructional design competency, as well as further resources to dig deeper and learn more

Please note that this book is not about developing your software skills or learning the numerous instructional design academic theories. Instead, it’s designed to help you level-up your existing core skillset and competencies quickly by offering practical application and tips.

Approach each competency chapter with self-awareness. Think about what you already know, what seems new, and how your skills match up. Even some of the most in-demand instructional designers have not mastered all four key competencies, so leave your proverbial ego at the door and practice self-reflection as you seek to improve your own skill set.

Keep a running list of the vocabulary you’ve learned, the exercises that appeal to you, the additional resources you would like to revisit when you have more time, and the template examples you might find handy in the future. Next-Level Instructional Design is a practical read, so use it in a practical way to benefit your current work situation or move toward your future aspirations.
