Managing user profiles


User profiles contain personalization settings for each user. On a Windows system, every user has their own profile. The user profile contains settings such as application settings, registry values, wallpaper settings, and so on.

Types of profiles

In a Windows computing environment, there are three primary types of profiles:

  • Local: A local profile is created the first time a user logs on to a computer. The profile is stored on the computer's local hard disk and is specific to that one system. This profile is stored locally and is not shared among other computers.

  • Roaming: A roaming profile is a copy of a locally generated profile that is copied to, and stored on, a network share. This profile is downloaded to any computer as part of the logon process. Changes made to a roaming user profile are synchronized with the server copy of the profile during the logoff process.

  • Mandatory: A mandatory profile is a type of profile that administrators can use to specify settings...
