CCNA Security 210-260 Certification Guide

Delving into Security Toolkits

The term firewall was derived from an automobile division. It actually means a segment that is extricated to release the engine screened-off area from the core of the automobile. But in the network world, it is used as a general term for how we isolate our internal network from outside attacks and threats. A firewall can be defined as any hardware or software that enables the filtering of packets or controls the flow of traffic. They are generally implemented at the perimeter of the network. They act as a border for trusted and untrusted zones.

For a company that secures the network and data, it will add complexity to the network administrator. The costs of maintaining and implementing such a high level of security, such as e-commerce, intranet, extranet, and email services, are always high, but when compared to the loss that is incurred due to the...

Firewall functions

Firewalls primarily have two functions:

  • Packet filtering
  • Network Address Translation

Most firewalls also perform two other important security services:

  • Encrypted authentication
  • Encrypted tunnels

Rules of a firewall

The rules of a firewall can be customized depending on our needs, requirements, and threat levels. There are different conditions on which firewall filters work. These are as follows:

  • IP address: The first condition on which a firewall rule works is on IP address. The decision is based on the range of IP addresses and subnet masks.
  • Domain name: The second condition on which a firewall works is on domain name. A firewall can be configured to permit or deny access to specified domain names...

Intrusion prevention system

An intrusion prevention system (IPS) is a proactive methodology to understand potential threats, stop attacks inline, and report them immediately. An IPS is a module or an individual device that can look into the payload of the traffic coming from the outside zone, thereby ensuring that any malicious traffic would be blocked inline:

Intrusion detection system

An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a monitoring system that passively monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic for suspicious attacker activity. An IDS is a module that can alert network devices, but it cannot stop attacks from happening. Generally, an IDS is configured in promiscuous mode because it cannot block the attacks, but only send alerts:

One major question you may have is how different is an IPS from a firewall that can also do deep-packet inspection? Well, the answer is that an IPS can identify traffic patterns that might match an attack, while a firewall can do an inspection on a per-packet basis, thereby they would not be intelligent enough to detect an attack. So, in any secure network, an IPS complements a firewall.

The different IPS and IDS identification methods are discussed here:

  • Signature-based: The IPS verifies the...

Virtual Private Network

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an extension of a private network into the public network domain. The public network would act as a private network and the user would be able to perform every function as if logged in to the private network. It also helps to allow a remote user to work with the same security and management policies defined by the administrator of the private network. This connection is established by a virtual point-to-point connection through a set of assigned connections and encryption, or a combination of both, depending on the business requirements.

VPNs allow employees to securely log in to their private network, even if they are not in their office premises. It is secure and cost-effective.

Any kind of network connection over an untrusted network, such as the internet, would benefit from implementing a VPN. Even inside an organization...

Content security

Content security is a general term that talks about the confidentiality, legal concerns, and security of a company's intellectual property.

Attacks are not only launched by individuals outside of the company. Sometimes attacks are initiated by an individual inside your organization, who has legitimate access to the resources. These concerns increase daily, because organizations allow their employees to bring your own devices (BYODs) and allow employees to access their applications, data, and devices. There are vulnerabilities in the network/system, and there are chances of losing content, such as important data/files, while sending them via file sharing or emails. Companies should take the necessary steps to protect their content by defining some in-depth defensive policies. Content security cannot be achieved by implementing normal security policies, instead...

Summary

In this chapter, we learned about firewall functions, their rules, and the types of firewalls, such as packet-filtering firewalls, stateful firewalls, application firewalls, and zone-based firewalls. We also looked at IPS, IDS, VPN, and content security in detail.

In the next chapter, we will discuss the concepts of security policies, assets, and other security design considerations.

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:
