The simple out of the box installation is quite straightforward with preconfigured options that are aimed at having a complete, working content management system in no time. This chapter provides you with a basic understanding of Alfresco architecture, various installation options, and the key terminologies used. By the end of this chapter, you will be well equipped with the information to make a choice on the suitable operating system, database, application server, and other software required for your installation. This chapter is essential reading for anyone not already familiar with Alfresco.

  • How to install Alfresco and all the required software
  • How to install Alfresco components...

Installing Alfresco

Before directly delving into installation, it is important for you to understand the architecture behind Alfresco and various installation options available to you. This will help you to make good decisions in selecting the suitable software for your business application.

Out of the box installation architecture

The out of the box deployment of Alfresco is a typical web application architecture consisting of different layers as shown in the following diagram. This new architecture is basically N-tier and delivers more scalability without massive hardware and software investment. It also accommodates more users with the existing hardware resources. The layered architecture of Alfresco provides the benefits of easily manageable, flexible, and highly scalable content management solution.

Out of the box installation architecture

Client applications layer

The client applications layer contains the actual application as a web browser on the user's machine; basically the presentation layer. Out of the box Alfresco...

Summary

You have so many options to choose from while installing Alfresco. Alfresco installers on Windows and Linux operating systems make the installation process so simple that you could install all the installation software such as JDK, MySQL, Alfresco, SharePoint protocol, OpenOffice, and Office Addins within minutes. On the Windows platform you can run Alfresco as a service or as a console application. I am an enterprise architect and I have a few Alfresco projects going on, as Alfresco is rapidly replacing Documentum, FileNet and other EDMS in many enterprises (and government agencies). So I went and bought all the Alfresco books available on Amazon, as a EA and PM, I do not have much time to learn all the new technology so I read ebooks when I have 10 minutes here and there between meetings. My surprise was that majority of the Alfresco books out there are for a older version of Alfresco (version 3), and many of the code example, deployment procedures simply would not work.So after 10+ Alfresco books, I can only recommend 'Alfresco 4 Enterprise Content Management Implementation' book, and there is another Alfresco 4 book, I personally like this book because it is written in such a way that is very clear, practical and easy to follow. If I would like to design the Alfresco to a backend system, I can just read the CMIS section and there is working examples that I can follow. And also I love Packt Publishing for their super easy to use eBooks app and management system and their pricing for eBooks.Thank you Amazon, Packt and Munwar Shariff for your great work and great help on Alfresco projects !!!Sam WuEnterprise ArchitectReston, VA

Written for System Administrators, Developers, and experienced users, the book provides a good overview of implementing, customizing, and administering the Alfresco 4 Enterprise Content Management suite. The initial chapters walk the reader through the process of installing the software (a few more screenshots for novice users may have been helpful). The configuration/usage section is very thorough and provides plenty of screenshots/explanations of the different features and options available. The workflow section is also very helpful for anyone automating business processes using the package. Finally, integration with other apps is also covered in the book (something that is often left out in books on the topic). Overall, I think the book covers the various aspects of Alfresco in great detail and would be very helpful for anyone wanting to learn more about the platform.

If you are new comer to Alfresco, then this book is for you. It covers all the basics for Alfresco 4.1.2 Enterprise Edition. If you are familiar with Alfresco 3 or you have purchased the previous version Alfresco 3 book, there is not really much of a change. In fact, the table of contents of Alfresco 4 is pretty much the same as Alfresco 3.I got the most value out of this book from workflow and scanning solution integration.Support for advanced workflows is now provided by Activiti workflow engine. The author does an excellent job introducing BPMN and workflow basics of Activiti workflow. There are step by step instructions on how to use Activiti Process Designer to define custom workflow as well as potential extensions to the individual tasks in the workflow. There is a new chapter in this book that talks about the integration between Ephesoft and Alfresco. If you are not familiar with various scanning products like Captiva and Kofax, Ephesoft is open source product that integrates directly with Alfresco. Not only does it have basic features OCR and indexing, it also has ability to classify and automatically extract data from forms. All of major ECM vendors have advanced workflow engine and integration with advanced scanning solution. With the introduction of the Activiti and tight integration with Ephesoft, Alfresco 4 is quickly catching up to EMC, IBM, and Microsoft. I am glad that the author covered these two topics; my only wish is that he would have covered them in more detail.

As the title suggests this book is written for Alfresco 4 Enterprise edition (commercial), however most of these examples should work on the free edition as well. “Alfresco 4 Enterprise content management and implementation” is probably the only Alfresco ECM book out in the market for “Version 4” as on Dec 2013. It is needless to say this book has no competition. Never the less this book is a well written one. Following Alfresco 3 Enterprise content management, which makes it the second version even more solid. This Alfresco book covers but not limited to topics such as installation, getting started, security, workflow, other application integration, alfresco share, UI customization, search, imaging and Forms Processing and systems administration. The topics are explained with appropriate diagrams, configuration screen shots, example configuration files and java scripts; which makes this book easy to follow. This book can be used as a cookbook as well.Alfresco 4 ECM can be used by the beginners as well as advanced users. This book shall help users with implementation basics, application and process integration, systems administration, as a reference book or even as a cook book for implementing certain technology or integration. Basic linux administration HTML, XML, JavaScript knowledge will be useful while following this book. Some of the chapters can be useful for business owner, process owners or project managers who wants to take full advantage of alfresco ECM, in terms of mapping business process to the application or leveraging application features in the business e.g. introduction to Alfresco, Implementing Business Rules, Implementing Workflow etc.
