Customers using more than one VMware vCenter Server installation on multiple sites often had problems with managing VM templates, scripts, and ISO templates. As previous vCenter Server implementations had no synchronization mechanisms for these data, customers had the challenge to implement their own convenient way for content replication (for example, NFS repositories). Only customers who were using vCloud Suite were able to create the so called catalogs, using vCloud Connector. The main disadvantage was that such implementations required inefficient third-party solutions, outside vSphere.
Content library simplifies management of virtual data center content by offering a central solution. It is now possible to maintain VM templates and ISO templates in centralized catalogs. A main catalog including these files is replicated to subscribed vCenter Server systems, cloning the data to their local catalog.
