How to cut in window and door openings
In order to cut an opening for windows and doors, there are two parts involved. The first is to make the shape for the hole, which involves precision drafting for accurate measurements. The second part is creating the hole, which is a quick extrusion. We will break up the steps to make it easier to understand.
Making the shape for the windows and doors
We will use the CAD plan to create the openings for windows and doors. (If you turned off the visibility to the CAD plan in the Tracing the drawing in 2D section, turn it on again now.) Cutting openings requires the use of the following SketchUp tools:
- X-ray face style or Back Edges edge style (or switch between the two) to see the CAD plan through the three-dimensional wall
- The Tape Measure tool to create guide lines and guide points (as discussed in Chapter 1)
- The Line or Rectangle tool
