Microsoft HoloLens Developer???s Guide

Designing Your App

The HoloLens is a great device. Everyone who puts it on is amazed. I always ensure that I explain how to use the device in detail before I allow people to put it on--the moment they wear it, they stop listening and are in awe of the experience.

Of course, once the initial wonder of seeing things float in mid-air in front of them wears off, they want to use apps and the experience should match the first moment of magic. Therefore, we need to ensure that our apps are just as good and deliver on that promise. To do that, we have to know how to design for the HoloLens. Guess what--this is what we will talk about right now!

Unique features of the device

The device is different from any other computing platforms you have seen before. If you are an experienced developer, you probably think that you know your way around computers and developing for Windows, but the truth is that HoloLens is not your average Windows 10 machine. There are some special and unique features that require another way of thinking about designing apps. Let's take a look at them again, and we will discuss what this means for your design process.

Thinking in three dimensions

First of all, normal Windows 10 applications are flat. It does not matter whether you write console applications, desktop applications, store applications, or mobile apps--all the action the users...

Forming a design team

Design is a specialized job that requires specialized skills. If you are lucky, you have access to professional designers and user experience experts. However, keep in mind that even those professionals probably have little or no experience designing holographic worlds. It is up to you to tell them what to design, how to design, and what things to keep in mind when designing.

I strongly believe in the Agile approach when it comes to developing software. This means that we form teams that are fully self-sufficient. In that philosophy, designers are part of the team, just like the developers, testers, and other professionals. Design is a very important part of developing software, and more so in a graphic-rich environment, such as apps for the HoloLens.

That being said, not all projects need graphical designers, user experience designers and, interaction designers...

Using your experience

We have talked about the bigger principles in the earlier sections of this chapter. From this point on, I will give you some pointers that will help you do the design work even if you are not a designer. Keep in mind that all this has to fit the big ideas outlined earlier.

I assume that you are an experienced developer. I guess you have written software before you picked up this book. Even if you have not done so, I think it would be fair to assume that you have used software before. Think about the apps you use on your smartphone. Which ones do you like to use? Which ones do you not like? Which apps do you use because you have to but do not enjoy doing so? Why is that?

It can be tremendously helpful to look at the software you use every day and make a list of things you like and dislike about them. This list will be highly personal--the things you like might...

The workflow to identify your features

It is not easy to identify what your app needs to shine. I earlier stated that you have to ensure that your app is goal-driven, but how do you achieve that? To help you do this, I have created the following workflow that you might want to follow when thinking about your next project:

  1. Write down your mission statement.
  2. Brainstorm all ideas.
  3. Remove ideas that don't support the mission statement.
  4. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves.
  5. Prioritize must-haves.
  6. Implement.

Writing down your mission statement

Think about your idea. Can you describe it in one line? To help you do that, I have created a template to fill in:

"My app [app name] is the best app to help [audience] [task...

Introducing the RockOn app

Let's take a side step. We are no longer rock-star holographic app designers and developers, we are rock stars. We make a living standing on stages all over the world, playing our music to thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of people from all walks of life. We are the centerpiece of a rock band and, as such, personally responsible for giving the best show we can.

For years, we have done this in the same way. We have a fixed setup on the stage. After all, having your own spot on the stage helps with stage fright. All those different venues can be intimidating; that feeling can be taken away with having your own spot.

However, when every show all over the world uses the same setup, it is not likely that we are using the possibilities of the venue to its fullest. Every room or stadium has its own acoustics and layout. In order to give...

Summary

In this chapter, we learned a lot about designing your app for HoloLens. Although the main steps we took when we started thinking about our app are not that different from normal app development, we identified some key areas that require more attention. We also talked about the way people interact with each other and how to design your app around that. This is something you usually do not take into account when designing your app.

We took our first steps in developing our RockOn app. We started developing in Unity3D, and we added some assets to our holographic world. Then, we deployed that to a device and saw our 3D objects come alive. We are now ready for the next step!

Key benefits

  • Create immersive augmented reality apps for Microsoft HoloLens from scratch
  • Leverage the powerful HoloLens sensors to interact with real-world motions and gestures and make your app life-like
  • Explore the powerful Unity 5 SDK along with the Windows Unified platform to get the most out of your HoloLens app

Description

HoloLens, Microsoft’s innovative augmented reality headset, overlaps holograms into a user’s vision of their environment. Your ideas are closer to becoming real when you can create and work with holograms in relation to the world around you. If you are dreaming beyond virtual worlds, beyond screens, beyond pixels, and want to take a big leap in the world of augmented reality, then this is the book you want. Starting off with brainstorming and the design process, you will take your first steps in creating your application for HoloLens. You will learn to add gestures and write an app that responds to verbal commands before gradually moving on creating sounds in the app and placing them in a 3D space. You will then communicate between devices in the boundaries of the UWP model.

Who is this book for?

If you are a developer who wants to create augmented reality apps for the Microsoft HoloLens platform, then this is the book for you. Coding experience with C# is assumed.

What you will learn

  • Design an app for HoloLens that is feasible and attractive to use
  • Add gestures and interact with them
  • Create sounds in the app and place them in a 3D space
  • Use voice generation and voice recognition to make your apps more lifelike
  • Interact with the physical environment to place holograms on top of physical objects
  • Compare HoloLens with the other products and know how to use its strengths
  • Use assets from third parties to enrich our app

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
