vSphere Update Manager and the vCenter Server Appliance
In previous editions of vSphere, the end-to-end installation of vSphere Update Manager used either a Windows-based vCenter Server or on a standalone Microsoft Windows Server. This included setting up the VUM database, creating an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) data source name (DSN) and, finally, installing the vSphere Update Manager application. VMware is transitioning vCenter to use the vCenter Server Appliance, without Windows. While Windows is still an option, as we covered in Chapter 3, again, we will focus on vSphere Update Manager and how it now functions with the vCenter Server Appliance. Though some of these topics will overlap with the Windows-based version, we will primarily focus on vSphere Update Manager and how it currently functions with the vCenter Server Appliance.
