Roles and Profiles

The roles and profiles pattern became common knowledge in the Puppet community following Craig Dunn's seminal blog post (https://www.craigdunn.org/2012/05/239/), and has been rapidly taken up by the rest of the community. It's now a widely adopted pattern or best practice. It's a reliable way to build reusable, configurable, and refactorable site-wide configuration code, and it's an approach to dealing with the interfaces of your infrastructure—using the software development paradigms of encapsulation and abstraction.

Before the pattern developed, the Puppet language itself provided just two levels of abstraction, as follows:

Description

Puppet is a configuration management system and a language written for and by system administrators to manage a large number of systems efficiently and prevent configuration drift. The core topics this book addresses are Puppet's latest features and mastering Puppet Enterprise. It is clear that the authors of this book have spent a ton of time using Puppet. This book does a fantastic job of covering all aspects of Puppet while focusing on points that improves the reader's Puppet mastery most effectively.Time isn't wasted reiterating things that are already available from Puppet docs, so in cases where they may be relevant, the book provides links them as extra reading. Therefore, Puppet users of all levels are able to benefit from the book. More advanced users can jump to whichever section they need, while newer users can dive deeper into the fundamentals by reading the linked material on Puppet docs.

Excellent daily resource for accelerating my knowledge of Puppet. The authors speak to routine complexities as well as the discrete one offs. The tone of the book drives me down a relaxing road of smoked coconut vapor topped with a an undercut of surgical precision. Fancy and clean.

This book is a fantastic dive in automation using Puppet. The author’s understanding of the components, including best practices and real world application, is a refreshing find. The topics hit throughout are immediately useful and demonstrate the “why” as opposed to best practice dictation.

Mastering Puppet 5 is a pretty apt title for this book. It covers everything that most people that are using Puppet will or should be utilizing. Jason and Ryan do a great job at showing what decisions should be made for Puppet to be used in production environments, including testing. Much of this goes beyond what is given in Puppet's own documentation and is more relevant to the production environments that most of us are utilizing Puppet in. Beginners (especially those in existing Puppet environments) and experts alike will find this book useful for both explanations as well as a reference for architectural decisions.

This book presents Puppet at a very low level, deep in the internals. The first chapter talks about writing "modules" without explaining what a module's is, or how it is used. It's a downward spiral from there, with more and more confusing topics presented and no explanation about how all the parts fit together. It seemed that the author was more concerned with showing how much he knows about Puppet than teaching us how to use it.
