Choosing a shard key

As mentioned earlier, the value of the field or fields chosen as the shard key influences how the balancer decides to distribute documents into chunks. In order to choose a shard key that produces the evenest distribution of documents within chunks, careful consideration needs to be made of the following: cardinality, frequency, and change.
