Democratizing No-Code Application Development with Bubble

Navigating the UI Builder Components Tab

The process of building a web app consists of adding components to a blank canvas (the editor) using drag-and-drop features and making sure you have the right building blocks added to the page to build the perfect layout to achieve your desired goals.

In the previous chapter, you learned how to create your account and what are the main areas of the Bubble editor. In this chapter, you will take a closer look at the UI Builder components tab available inside Bubble. You are going to learn the key areas and features, what they are, and how they work.

This knowledge is valuable because it will allow you to understand the core features of Bubble and how to use and interact with the UI sidebar and its components, allowing you to build your own applications with ease.

This chapter will cover the following topics:

  • Presenting the UI Builder components tab and the sidebar
  • Understanding the structure of the UI Builder tab
  • Learning...

Presenting the UI Builder components tab and the sidebar

Let’s break down the components by category so that you can follow the Bubble editor as it is from top to bottom. We are going to start on the Design tab, which is the main tab you see selected when joining your Bubble editor. We are going to start with the sidebar items, making sure the UI Builder tab is selected at the top of the Visual Elements sidebar.

The Design tab and sidebar UI Builder tab are selected, as shown here:

Figure 2.1: Design tab – UI Builder

Figure 2.1: Design tab – UI Builder

Before we talk about UI components, it is important that we understand what the Elements Tree is; this is the first area on your component’s sidebar, as shown here:

Figure 2.2: UI Builder – Elements Tree

Figure 2.2: UI Builder – Elements Tree

Under the Elements Tree section, you will see each component that was applied to your page, meaning if you drag a new component to the canvas, it will show up there.

The UI Builder...

Presenting UI components

You learned all about the Elements Tree; now, let’s dive into UI components. It is important to notice that the visual components are divided by categories, inside the Bubble editor. Let’s break down each section so that you can learn what they are and what types of components you will be able to find in each category.

Visual Elements

These UI elements, as the name of the category suggests, are visual little blocks you are going to use to build pretty much any application. We can call this section the basic elements that will help you build web apps; it is very unlikely that you are not going to use a text component or a button on your application. Let’s say these are the most used and essential components for any project you are going to build using Bubble. Inside the Visual Elements category, you will find Text, Button, Icon, Link, Image, Shape, Alert, Video, HTML, Map, and Built on Bubble elements. These UI components are called...

Summary

In this chapter, we explored UI Builder components and the sidebar, getting familiar with their structure and functionality within Bubble. This foundational understanding helps you navigate Bubble’s interface effectively while working on your applications.

You also learned about the Elements Tree and how it can help you control component visibility, along with using conditional settings efficiently. These insights enable you to manage components accurately, enhancing your application’s usability.

Additionally, you learned important concepts such as container components, input forms, and the benefits of reusable elements. You also discovered how to expand your toolkit by installing additional components from the Plugins Marketplace, opening up new possibilities for your application development journey.

Throughout the chapter, you gained practical insights into best practices and efficiency tips for managing and utilizing components effectively. With this...

Caio’s book truly embraces the theme of democratizing Bubble by acting as a translator for the beast that is the Bubble manual. He organized the book with a very clear setup right from the preface about who this book is geared towards and what each chapter covers. The book certainly delivered as a comprehensive intro for beginners looking to make their first app and become mostly self-taught no-code developers. It reads just like a product manual, but much less boring, and is packed with valuable insights that I believe could jumpstart a career as a freelance Bubbler. The entire book is thoughtfully organized. It flows well from beginning concepts to references to more elaborate, broader, or more intermediate-level concepts. The bolded terms are useful, especially for abbreviations that we may not be aware of as noobs, like CTA (call to action). The way he went about introducing new terms successfully created a positive sense of becoming more fluent in the language of no-code platforms as a whole. One thing that could be added is a glossary of these terms (in addition to what’s already in the Index). Maybe in the next edition!Getting back to the good stuff, each element or component is defined in a detailed way. He did a great job at providing helpful use cases that are specific enough to grasp, yet general enough for the reader to know whether or not something would be appropriate for what he/she has in mind for his/her specific build. Overall, chapters are written in a familiar tone which gives the impression of having a casual chat with an expert who’s meeting you where you’re at and spilling the tea just for you. I liked that! Many of us start learning about Bubble because we’ve got a big idea of what we need to see built. A lot of the tips in this book are very broadly worded or general, so I’d recommend brainstorming ideas for your first Bubble build if you haven’t already before getting all the way to the theoretical chapters (like before starting chapter 4, definitely). As a beginner Bubbler, I appreciated that there were pictures along with his introductions to each area in the Bubble editor. Though I'm already in a no-code boot camp, I found that this book was really nice as a supplement to my lessons and live sessions. For instance, I first read about backend workflows in this book, but I'd already been playing on Bubble for two months and I'd never seen such a thing (on my free plan)! That's exactly the sort of comprehensive background I was looking for in an introductory guide to such a vast platform as Bubble.I personally found reading Caio’s introduction to Bubble to be a great alternative to watching video tutorials (no shade thrown at the many hardworking people who have made beginner Bubble walk-throughs and tutorials). I felt that reading about the basics of Bubble was a nice step up from playing/pausing a video to get glances at the same important info. I also loved the curated list of popular/useful plugins and the stressed importance of how apps rely on them to work, as well as the list of websites where you can find APIs. Plugins and APIs are two areas that give Bubble such flexibility and endless building possibilities, and I thought it was really helpful to know where to go and what to look for right off the bat.I think it’s important to mention that there are many very complex topics that are so well explained, like database schema and APIs. For example, APIs as a concept is very in-depth and complicated to follow as a beginner who has no background in coding languages. However, as we’ll need this information as builders, Caio took on the job of explaining them in the easiest way possible. He really had a great grasp on how to level his language and simplify concepts in that part of the book in particular (APIs have previously gone right over my head, so I appreciated that).Another great hack from this book were the no-code-specific testing and monitoring tools mentioned. They really could be the best route for beginners (because oh man did I struggle with responsiveness in Framer). Actually, there are plenty gems in there (I didn’t even mention the business insights about scalability and performance!).You can tell that Caio really wants to assist beginners in getting a positive start with Bubbling. Overall, the book matches up beautifully with the spirit of no-code tools, which is to get something useful up and running quickly.

Picked up this book a couples weeks ago and it's been my trusty sidekick ever since. I'm still pretty new to Bubble, and this book is an awesome reference guide as I learn. It's straightforward and breaks down Bubble in a way that's easy to understand. Big shoutout for making it so user-friendly and helpful.

If you are looking to learn No-Code, especially on Bubble.io, this guide is an excellent starting point.Typically, one's journey involves attending online bootcamps hosted by major agencies or continually discovering new content on YouTube. Undoubtedly, the 'learn by doing' approach is the most effective way to master Bubble.io.However, for those who need a theoretical foundation, this book proves invaluable. It is packed with knowledge about the basics and it goes deeper into the essential skills required to develop on Bubble.io.Additionally, it presents real-case studies and examples of various apps, making it a very user-friendly guide for beginners to keep at hand. However, if you have moved beyond the beginner stage, this guide may not be for you, unless you seek a handy resource for refreshing basic concepts.Caio has done a great job facilitating learning Bubble.io in a distinctive manner. I recall wishing for such a resource when I started—having this book three years ago would have made my journey significantly smoother :)For sure a keeper for the beginners in Bubble.io!

I was given the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. I have been working as a Bubble developer for almost three years. I think the book that Caio has written might be the most comprehensive guide I have seen– especially in written form.If you are trying to learn Bubble this would be a great resource to keep on the side of your desk and constantly reference as you grow in confidence and skill. I also appreciate that this book goes beyond just the technical ins and outs of Bubble and includes introductions to topics like Human-Centered Design/Design Thinking, data base architecting, and testing/QA.However, if you are already familiar with Bubble you will likely find this book is more targeted for beginners and seems designed to take someone with no experience to launching their first app and is loaded with images, references, and tips. But seeing that there is so much growing demand for Bubble developers I am supportive of this goal and will likely be buying a few copies for clients and friends who are just starting out on their Bubble journey.
