Geocoding addresses


The geocoding process requires four steps:

  1. Preparing reference data: The following are the details of this step:

    • The point, line, or polygon geometry

    • It contains address information compatible with an address locator style

  2. Choosing an address locator style: The following are the details of this step:

    • It has a different number of required and optional fields

    • Depending on the address information from your resource data, choose the most suitable template to create an address locator

  3. Creating an address locator: The following are the details of this step:

    • Rules for interpreting addresses (for example, odd street numbers are on the left-hand side of the street)

    • List of standard street components (for example, abbreviations such as Boulevard = Blvd)

    • Snapshot of reference data (for example, centerline streets)

  4. Geocoding or matching addresses: The following are the details of this step:

    • Finding individual addresses

    • Creating point features based on a nonspatial address table
